Dr. Austin Doby, DVM – Part 1

From Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery to training barrel futurity horses, Dr. Austin Doby is a busy guy. He shares with host Destri Millsap, ATC what he looks for in a futurity prospects and his process for getting them ready for the futurity pen.

Dr. Doby discusses the benefits of conditioning, core engagement and rib cage flexibility in maintaining his horses’ health and wellbeing, as well as keeping them winning in the arena. He talks about the importance of paying attention to the feel of your horse, to know when to progress a young one or knowing when they are starting to get sore. He gives you things to watch for as signs of soreness setting in for your rope or barrel horse.

He also discusses EIPH, or bleeding in performance horses and management. Looking for the root cause of bleeding, and determining appropriate treatment and prevention. This is part 1 of 2, which we hope you tune in for both.
